About Design Council
Design Council is an enterprising charity which improves people’s lives through the use of design. Our work places design at the heart of stimulating business growth, helps to transform our public services and enhances places and cities to ensure a sustainable future for everyone. We advance new design thinking, encourage debate and inform government policy. Our vision is to create a better world by design.
We have an income of circa £6 million per annum and a core staff of around 60 who coordinate our programmes. We also draw on a network of 300 design and built environment experts, based across the country, who help us to deliver our services.
We deliver a wide range of services, including a £3 million programme of work for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) to stimulate innovation in business and public services and to inform design policy. This grant funding is confirmed until March 2016.
Key programmes include:
- Design Coaching: we provide a suite of coaching and innovation services for small businesses via government’s Business Growth Service, and beyond that for technology start-ups, public services, and universities. We are developing specialist coaching programmes for supply chains, export businesses and business schools.
- City support: we deliver design support to cities and regions to bring a holistic new approach to deliver their ambitions for locally-led growth. This covers areas like developing infrastructure, delivering affordable new homes and stimulating local economic growth.
- Design Council Spark: launched in 2014, this is a new product innovation fund to uncover the UK's next great inventions. We are supporting 10 ventures on a 20 week bespoke programme, as well as providing investment to help bring their physical product prototype or idea to market.
- Design education: we are piloting a Design Academy this autumn which aims to bridge the design skills gap between industry and academia. We are also supporting the implementation of government’s Creative Industries Strategy.
Our charity continues to go through a period of business change. In order to retain our position as a leader in the world of design, we must continue to grow and diversify our programmes and revenue streams. This supports our objective to be less reliant on the government grant.
Design Council currently has 11 trustees (of a maximum number of 15). We are recruiting three new trustees as part of our natural governance cycle to ensure we have a balance of skills and expertise on the board.
