In addition to great design skills (finding, understanding and interpreting research insights, sketching and form detailing), candidates should be able to justify the market for the developments. The role of Innovation Manager blends a packaging / product design skill with project and process management to ensure a pipeline of generic products / ranges, strategically placed in the company’s portfolio.
Duties and responsibilities
–Annual review of NPD Strategy to align with the market environment and business strategy
–Management of the Innovation function. Leadership of regular cross departmental Innovation meetings.
–Management of the New Product Development (NPD) procedures and protocols and ensure the continuation of best practice
–Primary and Secondary research compilation into focussed key trend presentations
–Initiating idea generation based on the research for assessment against the implemented NPD Strategy
–Visual / sketch model representation of ideas for conveying design value (features and benefits)
–Write product briefs / specifications for clear product definition before development
–Co-ordination of the detail design development
–Market research reports into existing and new sectors to form a case for investment in NPD’s for review by for senior management to justify product development
–Market validation with customers and consmers to prove product integrity
–Project Managing the introduction of new projects through to launch, policing milestones across departments and concurrent projects
–Attendance of industry focussed Seminars and Exhibitions in order to keep knowledge current
–To manage and maintain a library of industry magazines and website information
–Train appropriate staff members in a planned and structured manner
Required Skills/ Experience
–Degree in Industrial / Product / Packaging Design
–Knowledge of 3D CAD software and interpreting / understanding 2D drawings
–Excellent at Hand Sketching and representing products visually
–Strong material / manufacture knowledge
–Skills in Model Making and sketch modelling for packaging
–Excellent at 2D graphical presentation of both products and text / data
–Passionate about studying consumer behaviour and emerging trends
–Able to challenge preconceptions and able to articulate thoughts clearly and rationally
–Fantastic idea generation and problem solving mindset
–Resourceful in finding a route to the desired / target outcome
–Able to convince different audiences of a products validity
–Able to focus on the detail as well as the broad strategic picture
–Recognise the differences in brands, international consumers, markets and socio-cultural trends
–Used to undertaking technical product performance and consumer trials
–An understanding of how to build a case for investment
–Proficiency in Photoshop and Illustrator
–A working knowledge of Intellectual Property, including patents, trademarks, design registrations and the methods of searching existing IP
–Good time management skills and able to project manage multiple projects
–Used to managing a project through different departments and Managers’ resources
–Passion for Brands, Design, Food, Trends
